The coin’s reverse portrays an image of a formidable dragon longing for the Pearl of Wisdom, surrounded by wind and fire. Also featured is the inscription ‘Year of the Dragon’ below the Chinese character for Dragon and the Perth Mint’s security feature ‘P’ mintmark.
The obverse of the coin features the Ian-Rank Broadley likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, rounded by the coin’s specifications of weight, purity, metal content and face value.
The Chinese Lunar Calendar reputedly dates back beyond 2,6000 BC making it the oldest chronological record in history. Each year in the 12-year lunar cycle is represented by a different animal, the order of which was determined by a race involving all animals across a river.
