Reputedly the oldest chronological record in history, the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back beyond 2,600 BC. Based on the appearance of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in the 12-year lunar cycle. According to legend, the order of the animals in Chinese astrology was determined by their race across a river. Unknown to the ox, the mouse hitched a ride on its back, leaping to victory at the very last second. The tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig followed the quick-thinking mouse and the flabbergasted ox to dry land.

In Chinese culture, each animal is believed to influence the personality of the people born under its ‘rule’. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac. The Dragon is a symbol of power and wealth and is believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. People born in the year of the dragon have a natural charisma, ambition and determination. They are natural organizers, known for their positive attitude and vibrant personalities. The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar dragon include 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012.

Reverse: The coloured artistry of each coin in this set come together to create a seamlessly blended image. The top coin depicts Ao Shun, the Black Dragon, on top of a mountain; the right-hand coin depicts Ao Guang, the Azure Dragon, near a rocky waterfall; the bottom coin depicts Ao Qin, the Red Dragon, splashing in a river; the left-hand coin depicts Ao Run, the White Dragon, with forked lightning in the sky.

Obverse: Portrays the official Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign – ‘1952 – 2022’.
