The kangaroo gold coin is also known as an Australian nugget, named after the Welcome Stranger nugget, the largest gold nugget ever discovered in Australia. First released in 1986 by the West Australian government, the coin has seen significant design changes throughout the years, featuring an artistic portrayal of a kangaroo since 1989.

 The obverse design features the well-known Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the JC imprint, country of origin, and coin's face value. The reverse design features a kangaroo in crouched position, surrounded by native Waratah and Kangaroo Paw flora.
